Warren Merrick Larter Warren “Rick” M. Larter, 88, of Johnstown, NY, died peacefully on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the Wells Nursing Home in Johnstown, NY, surrounded by close family and many prayers. He was born October 4, 1928 in Newark, NJ, the son of Warren R. and Marian Merrick Larter. Rick graduated from Johnstown High School in 1946 and from St. Lawrence University in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1954. Rick was an active member of Boy Scout Troop 101 in Johnstown, achieving the rank of Star and eventually leading as its Scoutmaster. He served separately as both a deacon and an elder at the First Presbyterian Church of Johnstown. Rick served as treasurer of several organizations – the Royal Mountain Ski Club, the Fulton County Community Chest and the United Way of Johnstown. He was a member of the Burroughs’ Nature Study Club, St. Patrick’s Masonic Lodge No. 4 F. & A.M., and the Colonial Club. Mr. Larter worked diligently to help bring a much-needed nursing home facility to the community, the Wells Nursing Home of Johnstown, NY. He was an original member of its board of directors starting in 1970 and served as its president from 1975 – 2008. He continued to serve as an honorary member on its board for several more years. Mr. Larter ran the Fulton County Credit and Collection Bureau, and County Seat Abstract, a title insurance company from his office on West Main Street in Johnstown. He always made time for coffee with his friends and colleagues at Peter’s Sandwich Shop, Wally’s and the Vintage Café. Rick is survived by his wife, the former Carol Flynn, whom he married on November 17, 1973. He leaves behind his son, Kevin C. Larter (Virginia) and three grandsons – Andrew, Samuel and John of Endicott, NY. He also leaves behind his cousin, Bentley A. Merrick (Elizabeth) of Essex Junction, VT and other cousins. Rick was predeceased by his cousins Marian M. Cutting of Ithaca, NY and Sally Dare of Myrtle Beach, SC. Rick loved surrounding himself with family, friends and man’s best friend – dogs. Some of his interests over the years included cooking, reading, enjoying candy and cigars, watching and playing golf, skiing, and spending time at camp in the Adirondacks. Rick and Carol spent many happy Friday evenings downstairs at Nick Stoner’s 19 th Hole laughing and eating at the long table next to the window with their friends. Friends may call Friday, October 28 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at the Ehle and Barnett Funeral Home, 15 North William Street, Johnstown, NY. A funeral service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 29 at 11:00 am. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.
