WATERFORD Rudolph C. Bechand, known to many as Mike or Rudy, died in the comfort of his home on Saturday, July 14, 2012 surrounded by his loving family. Born in Cohoes, N.Y. on May 1, 1927, Mike was the son of the late William J. and Laura Remillard Bechand. He was raised and educated in Cohoes, attending both St. Joseph’s Grammar School and Cohoes High School. He was employed by the former Matton Shipyard in Cohoes before entering the Army to serve his country during World War II with the 78th Division’s 303rd Engineer Combat Battalion in Germany. For his service he was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Following his honorable discharge in 1947, Mike returned home to Cohoes and soon after moved to “Northside” in Waterford where he resided for many years before moving to his present home in 1987. He had also served with the New York National Guard for several years. Mike was a retiree of the Ford Motor Company in Green Island where he was employed for 42 years. He was a communicant of the former St. Ann’s Church in Waterford where he served as a member of the Holy Name Society and on the bingo committee. In recent years he attended Mass at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford. He was a member of the United Auto Workers Union and the Troy Lodge of Elks where he enjoyed 35 years of membership. In retirement, Mike enjoyed the times spent at home, the company of his family, swimming, gardening and helping his family. He was a former league bowler and enjoyed playing cards, darts and hunting. Mike was the beloved husband of 58 years to Agnes M. McEniry Bechand; the loving father of Mary C. Bechand of Halfmoon, Marie E. Bechand of Troy, James A. (Ann Marie) Bechand of Lloyd Harbor, L.I., Carole Ann (Christopher) Phillips of Waterford and the late Michael J. Bechand of Rensselaer; the cherished grandfather of Sarah Jane and Sophia Phillips and Josephine, James, Catherine, Molly and Emma Bechand; the dear brother of Joyce (late Gary) Farrell of Waterford, and the late Raymond and Gloria Bechand, the late Dorothy and James Ham, the late Leona and Ernest Gregoire, the late William and Cele (Heroux ) Bechand and the late Cele and Thomas Delaney; the brother-in-law of Mary Bechand (wife of the late William Bechand) of Troy. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Funeral from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, 133 Broad St., (Route 32), Waterford on Wednesday morning at 9:15 a.m. and at 10 a.m. in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Waterford where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Interment will follow in the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery.
